NSW SENIOR WOMEN AT THE NATIONALS
New South Wales finished sixth in the Betty Collins OAM Trophy at the Australian Senior Sides Championships at Osborne Park in Western Australia, recording two wins and a draw from its seven matches. NSW's final position did not fully reflect how closely contested much of the competition was. The changeable Perth conditions with the “Freemantle Doctor!” wind gusts, proving challenging to all teams.
South Tamworth's Carol White and Chris Myers combined with Claire Kelly and Raweang Namutwong were ranked as the number 1 ranked New South Wales rink. This meant meeting the corresponding top combination from each state in every round. Four of their six defeats were decided by only two or three shots, while theeir rink also produced an excellent 25-13 victory against the Australian Capital Territory.
The Chris Myers side opponents included Tasmanian Bowler of the Year Kim Saunders, former Australian representative Beth Quinlan, World Champion and Australian Open winner Julie Keegan, and Western Australia's Helen Stevens, whose rink remained the competition's only unbeaten combination after six rounds. That caliber of opposition highlights the level at which Carol and Chris were competing.
Although the overall result was not what New South Wales had hoped for, Carol and Chris can be proud of representing their state with determination in testing conditions and against some of Australia's most accomplished senior bowlers.
NORTH WEST REPRESENTATIVE TRIALS
South Tamworth was well represented at the North West selection trials held at Moree Services Club on Saturday 17 October. The men’s open and senior sides are expected to be selected over the coming week for the next stage of trials against Mid West at Gunnedah Bowling Club on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November. We wish all our bowlers well as they await the selections. At the time of writing, the women’s selection trial was underway at Moree Services Club, with the side expected to be announced on Sunday afternoon.
CHAMPIONSHIP BOWLS
Two closely contested championship matches were decided over the weekend. In the Club Pairs Championship Quarter-Final, Lucas Preston and Gary Merton held on for a narrow 19-18 victory over Luke Sheather and Nathan Williamson.
The Club Singles Championship Quarter-Final was another excellent contest, with Clive Sheppeard defeating Graeme Nicholls 25-22 to secure his place in the Semi-Finals.
